Large Language Models (LLMs), like ChatGPT, translate words into numerical vectors so they can process them and produce intelligent, reasoned text. But… how does that really work?
In this article, I won’t talk about mathematical functions, probabilities, or neural networks. I’ll explain what really happens — in a way anyone can understand.
What Are Numerical Vectors?
Think about the RGB color system used to represent colors. It’s a vector with three dimensions:
- R (Red),
- G (Green),
- B (Blue).
Each dimension represents the amount of light for each color. When you combine them, you get a specific color — for example, purple or turquoise. In other words, a color can be represented by three numbers.
Surprisingly, the same thing happens with words.
From Colors to Meaning
The challenge is that we don’t know what dimensions to use for words. So LLMs do something clever: they look at which words appear near each other and calculate probabilities. From that process, semantic dimensions emerge — hidden axes of meaning.
For example:
- If a word often follows “the,” it’s probably a noun.
- If it appears near “galaxy,” “planet,” or “star,” it’s part of the astronomy field.
- If it’s found next to “launch,” it may represent something being released or propelled.
Step by step, the numbers begin to draw a map of meaning — not intuitive, but effective. It’s a slow and inefficient process, yet it allows machines to uncover a numeric shadow of language.
Transformers: The True Magic
Then come transformers, the architectures that allow models to understand relationships between words. They learn patterns like:
- grammatical structures (determiner → noun → verb → adverb),
- stylistic coherence,
- and thematic consistency (scientific, poetic, casual…).
Through this, LLMs learn how ideas are organized and start producing coherent, meaningful text. And that’s where the magic begins.
The Emergence of Thought
In theory, LLMs only manipulate numbers. But when those numbers begin to organize themselves into meaning, something remarkable occurs. Because thinking is not just calculating — it’s making sense of the world.
When a model understands that the sun warms the Earth, it’s not merely repeating words; it’s reflecting a structure of cause and effect, a fragment of universal logic. That ability to connect — to find structure within chaos — is the essence of thought.
Humans do it with neurons; LLMs do it with vectors. But both follow the same principle: information organizing itself until understanding emerges.

As these models process vast amounts of text, they begin to reveal the hidden architecture of reality — the symmetries of thought, the laws of meaning, the echoes of natural order.
