Waymo just expanded a whole new lot in LA, the Bay Area, and Silicon Valley.

Here’s how Waymo is making it more convenient for Californians to take a self-driving ride. This week, Waymo expanded its service zones by another 80 square miles — including new neighborhoods in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Silicon Valley.

That puts Waymo’s total coverage area in California at more than 250 square miles, making this one of its largest expansions to date.

Where You Can Hop a Waymo Now

If you reside anywhere these locations, the chances are, Waymo’s electric robotaxis now have a presence close to you.

In the Bay Area, Waymo now operates in:

In Silicon Valley, the firm just expanded to:

Palo Alto

Menlo Park

And in Los Angeles (beginning Wednesday), service is extending to:

All of Sunset Boulevard

You can now travel from Mid-City to Inglewood and Westchester, taking main roads like La Cienega and La Brea. That’s a significant improvement, particularly for the commuting public and riders in areas that were not well-served.

Pushing Forward — Even After Setbacks

This is in the wake of some difficult news. A few Waymo cars were destroyed and torched as part of protests in LA related to recent immigration raids. The company reacted by reducing service in portions of the city, particularly in the vicinity of Downtown.

Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli explained that the company is still restricting service in some areas but monitoring local events and traffic patterns. But ramping things back up quickly is the plan.

Despite those setbacks, Waymo is obviously not taking its foot off the accelerator.

Waymo’s Robotaxi Growth Is Taking Off

Waymo is experiencing massive demand nationwide — and not only in California. Paid rides in San Francisco, LA, Phoenix, and Austin have increased fivefold since June 2024.

Here’s the latest:

Over 250,000 paid rides every week across the four cities

Over 400 cars on the road in Los Angeles.

Over 600 cars in the San Francisco Bay Area

It’s clear more people are hopping into driverless cars — not just out of curiosity, but for everyday trips.

A Few Things to Know If You’re in California

Waymo rides are still limited in parts of Downtown LA for now.

Service in the newly added neighborhoods begins this week.

All rides are fully driverless, using Jaguar I-Pace electric vehicles.

You can book a ride through the Waymo One app, just like a rideshare.

The Bottom Line

Waymo recently added 80 additional square miles to its footprint in important California cities.

Its service extends now to more than 250 square miles of LA, Silicon Valley, and the Bay Area.

The company is expanding rapidly, with a quarter million paid trips each week.

In spite of recent vandalism and demonstrations, Waymo is remaining committed to expansion and safe service.
