I see founders making the same mistakes with AI again and again, and almost all of them come down to confusing what AI is responsible for. These are the patterns I see most often.

One of the most irrational things I see is founders confusing AI with thinking. There’s a growing belief that because AI exists, deep understanding is optional. That domain knowledge, technical literacy, or go-to-market intuition can be skipped because “the tools will handle it.”

In practice, this creates two common failure modes.

The first is founders trying to build an overly complex MVP without understanding the technical or regulatory realities behind it. They rely on AI to “figure things out,” and end up with products that are expensive, fragile, and painful to iterate on.

Second, go-to-market prep. ICP definitions, outreach messaging, sales scripts, pitch variations, follow-ups. AI doesn’t replace selling, but it removes the busywork that slows teams down before they even talk to customers.

Internal operations

Third, internal operations. Meeting summaries, action items, research, competitor analysis, regulatory scanning at a high level. These tasks don’t create direct value, but they consume a lot of founder time. AI is very good at taking them off your plate.

AI changes this by making compliance visible early and continuously. Instead of being a final checkpoint, it becomes a parallel process. Another overlooked advantage is documentation. Compliance-heavy products live and die by how well decisions are documented. AI is very good at turning meetings, architectural choices, and policy discussions into structured artifacts that regulators, partners, and auditors can understand.

Begin by setting up AI to help with writing, thinking, summarizing, and decision support. Emails, docs, notes, ideas. If AI doesn’t make the founder faster, nothing else matters.

Second and third hours go to one core workflow. For example, sales prep or product documentation: automate it end-to-end until it starts saving time every single week.

The last two hours go to templates and repeatability. Turn what worked once into a reusable system (prompts, workflows, checklists, integrations). This is where most founders fail. They use AI randomly instead of operationalizing it. Five hours is enough to see real ROI if the focus is narrow and practical.

What Should Remain Human-Driven in Fintech, No Matter How Good AI Gets

I’ve learned that whenever trust, judgment, or accountability are involved, AI can assist, but the responsibility still has to sit with a person.

Product direction

Product direction is one of them. AI can generate ideas and analyze data, but deciding what not to build, what risks are acceptable, and which users to prioritize requires context and responsibility. Those decisions define the company, and someone has to own them.

User relationships

User relationships are another. How you explain a fee, handle a mistake, or respond to a crisis matters more than technical perfection (especially if we’re talking about fintech). AI can support communication, but the final voice needs to be human.

Ethical and regulatory judgment

Finally, ethical and regulatory judgment cannot be outsourced. When something goes wrong, “the model suggested it” is not an acceptable answer. Accountability always sits with people. AI will keep getting better at execution. But leadership, trust, and responsibility are not execution problems. They’re human ones, and they should stay that way.
